Montelungo Terme Frazione di Pontremoli (MS) Pontremoli, kee and door to Alta Lunigiana and Tuscany. Seat of "Bancarella" literary award. Worth visiting are: Piagnaro castle, where the Museum of statue-menhirs is housed (info: 0187831439), the hamlet flanked by seventeenh century palaces full of treasures, the bridges over the Magra and Verde rivers, the Cathedral (17th century) with its baroque interior, the "Campanone", a bell-tower which survives the ancient wall built in the fourteenth century in an attempt to end the fighting between the Guelphes and Ghibellines, the Castelnuovo fortress, the church of S.Colombano and the church of S.Pietro with the pilgrim's maze carved in the stone, the church of Santissima Annunziata (1471). Environs: Zeri, typical mountain landscape where it is possible to ski in the winter months taking advantage of the Zum Zeri ski resort; situated along the ancient Via Francigena, Montelungo was in the Middle Ages the seat of a Benedictine hospital.
